Writing

In Year 2, we follow our school’s progression map, developing skills in Speaking and Listening, Grammar, Spelling, and Writing Composition. During English lessons, we use high-quality texts as stimuli, allowing children to write for a wide range of meaningful purposes and audiences.

Throughout the year, we collect evidence of the children’s writing so that we can make an accurate judgement in June. There are no formal national assessments for writing; instead, teacher assessment is used to determine each child’s level based on the work they produce independently.

Below you can see an example of the assessment sheet we complete for each child. We provide at least 6 pieces of evidence.

Writing Assessment (TAFS) ~ Teacher Judgement

Below, you can see an example of writing from children working at each of the three levels. While one piece of writing is not enough evidence to base a judgement on, they do give you an idea of the different levels that children within Year 2 can be working at.

Spelling In Year 2 & Writing At The Expected Standard

In Year 2, to reach the Expected Standard in Writing children must be able to:

  * Segment spoken words into phonemes and represent these by graphemes, spelling many correctly and making phonetically plausible attempts at others.

  * Spell many common exception words.

This is why practising spellings using our online subscription to Spelling Shed and learning any words sent home, is so important.
