The Music Curriculum

The core of the music curriculum is taught in six week blocks each term, using units from Charanga musical school.  This is enhanced with a weekly singing assembly in which children are taught a range of songs and techniques to support their vocal ability. As a church school, music forms a key part of our collective worship and a wide range of hymns and worship songs are regularly sung.

Recorder Programme

This year, in partnership with Warwickshire Music Hub, children in Year 3 and 4 are going to be learning how to play the recorder for a term. This new initiative, funded and resourced by Warwickshire Music Hub, comes out of the new Model Music Curriculum framing which states children in Years 3 and 4 should have the opportunity to learn a tuned instrument. Here are some of the Year 3's doing a great job!

Extra-curricular

Wolvey offers a range of extra-curricular activities which are open to children across key stage 2.

The value of music can't be underestimated, it builds self-esteem, promotes well-being and is proven to support learning in other academic areas. That's why we offer Rocksteady lessons in which children learn to perform as a Rock band and develop communication skills. The termly concerts are always a big event on the school calendar! More information about Rocksteady is available here

Additionally, we as a school have invested in all our disadvantaged pupils by putting them in the rocksteady lessons where they can join a band and provide for them the opportunity that they are entitled to.

Beyond the classroom, we have a Young Voices choir! This is an exciting opportunity for Years 2-6 where they sing contemporary songs which they enjoy performing and improving their singing ability. We will be attending a performance on the 26th January 2023 with many schools to sing together.

Knowledge Organisers

To help children with their learning, we use knowledge organisers which include a range of keywords, note lengths, traditional stave notation and different types of instruments. This a great resource that children use in their lessons to support their learning and understanding. This tool is also useful for children who need to articulate their musical experiences such as talking about the tempo of a Blues song or discussing the notes that sound nice together in a composition.

1-1 tuition

Wolvey school now delivers instrument tuition led and delivered by Mr Oakes (subject lead for Music) one afternoon every week. Guitar, Bass and Keyboard lessons are taught every Wednesday as part of our new initiative to boost the profile of music in the school. The children are thoroughly enjoying it! If your child attends Wolvey school and you would like them to get involved contact the school office or direct message Mr Oakes on ClassDojo and that can be arranged.
