Online Safety Downloads

Recently, for Online Safety Day, the teachers in KS1 & KS2 carried out surveys in their classrooms of which apps and websites the children regularly visit in their spare time. Whilst it is always difficult to carry out such surveys with children (they can be forgetful about what they have done!), it does show the wide variety of media the children have access to online and the need for parents to be vigilant and up-to-date on what there is on offer.

Keeping Safe Online ~ Advice From The Web

Below you will find links and documents that have been produced about the apps and websites that featured in the survey so that you can be informed about what your children are doing and how to keep them safe when online. 

  • Musical.ly Information published by Internet Matters ~ Minimum age is 13. Musical.ly allows users to make their own music videos and share them with their friends. It is described as being the fastest growing social network.
  • Instagram Information provided by NSPCC ~ Minimum age is 13. It allows users to share photographs and videos with other users.
  • Facebook Information provided by NSPCC ~ Minimum age is 13. Hugely popular social media network!
  • Snapchat Information provide by the NSPCC ~ Minimum age is 13. Allows users to send photographs and videos to friends and family that disappear from screen after a few seconds.
  • Whatsapp Information provided by NSPCC ~ Minimum age is 16. Allows users to send messages to friends and family.
  • Minecraft Information published by the NSPCC ~ Minimum age is 13. It is a gamesthat allows users to build virtual worlds and includes a multiplayer option.
  • Roblox Information published by the NSPCC ~ Whilst Roblox is aimed at a young audience (8+), it has recently been in the media after children had been subjected to inappropriate matter including that of a violent and sexual nature from other members of the Roblox community.
  • Bin Weevils Information published by the NSPCC ~ Minimum age is 13 years. It is a virtual online community where users can play free games and chat with friends.
  • Oovoo Information published by the NSPCC ~ Oovoo has a minimum age of 13 & is a video chat app allowing users to video call and send text messages.
  • Clash Of Clans Information published by the NSPCC ~ Minimum age is 13. Clash of Clans is a combat game in which users can build their own army and battle against other armies from around the world.
  • Dubsmash Information published by the NSPCC ~ Minimum age is 14. It allows users to create their own music videos and share them with friends and family.
  • Movie Star Planet Information published by the NSPCC ~ Minimum age is 8+. An online game in which users can chat to others, play games and watch videos.
  • Gaming Info We were quite concerned to find that some children were playing Grand Theft Auto as it has an age rating of 18 and includes material of a violent and sexual nature. This link gives information about PEGI who provide advice on the age suitability of games.
  • Digital Parenting Magazine Free to download ~ Produced by Vodaphone, it aims to keep parents and carers up-to-date on social media, online gaming and other online activities that their children may have access to.
