At Wolvey CofE Primary School, we are committed to nurturing responsible, confident and compassionate young people. Teaching British Values is a key part of this work and is woven through our curriculum, our culture and our daily interactions. These values support children to understand their place in modern Britain and to thrive as respectful, active members of society.
We promote the five core British Values throughout school life:
Democracy
Children learn that their voices matter. From school council elections to class decision-making, pupils experience democratic processes and understand the importance of participation and fairness.
The Rule of Law
We help children understand why rules exist and how they keep communities safe. Through restorative approaches, clear expectations and modelling positive behaviour, pupils learn the value of respectful conduct.
Individual Liberty
Pupils are encouraged to make informed choices, understand their rights and take responsibility for their actions. We teach them how to express themselves safely and confidently, both online and in the real world.
Mutual Respect
Respect is central to how we treat one another. Children learn to appreciate differences, listen to others and collaborate with kindness.
Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Through RE, assemblies and our diverse curriculum, pupils learn about a wide range of beliefs and worldviews. This helps them grow as open-minded, thoughtful individuals who celebrate diversity.
Our school vision states that “Embracing equality and experiencing excellence… every child is valued and celebrated.” Teaching British Values directly supports this. By recognising each child’s individuality and encouraging them to understand and respect the uniqueness of others, we build a community where everyone can belong and succeed.
As a caring Christian community, we model the principles of fairness, compassion and equality. Our relationships with children, families and the wider community reflect our belief that every person has worth. British Values strengthen this foundation by preparing our pupils to engage positively with the diverse society around them.
You will see British Values in action across the school:
Children contributing to decisions that shape their learning.
Opportunities for leadership through pupil voice groups.
Celebrations of different cultures, traditions and viewpoints.
Strong pastoral support that promotes empathy and respect.
Curriculum experiences that build character, curiosity and critical thinking.
By embedding British Values throughout school life, we ensure our pupils are ready to play their part in a modern, inclusive society — growing into thoughtful, respectful individuals who reflect the heart of our Wolvey community.
How is it taught?
British Values are taught in a weekly assembly by Mr Parker or Mrs Hawkins. These are then taught discreetly across lessons in school. Our PHSE curriculum, Jigsaw, is planned in to teach this across the academic year.
